The greatest, most remembered, and most sought after human emotions are love and joy. The two are inextricably linked. You cannot have one, but the other be absent. Joy abounds when we love, and love thrives when we are joyful. The whole story of mankind is built upon these feelings.
God created us because He loves us and wants us to find joy in loving Him.
We rebelled against God because we thought we could find our own pleasure in ourselves.
Christ died for our sin us because he loves us. God sent Him to die because He wants nothing more for us than that we find joy in His glory, but in order for us to worship in His presence, a perfect sacrifice for our sins had to be paid.
We as Christians will be joyfully singing of this divine love forever in God's presence, exactly as God planned from the beginning.
Let Pastor John Piper explain,
“…if God wants to love us infinitely and delight us fully and eternally, he must preserve for us the one thing that will satisfy us totally and eternally; namely, the presence and worth of his own glory. He alone is the source of full and lasting pleasure.” *
Do you want that pleasure? Are you hungry to be fed joy from the table of God’s love? There is no other place to go than directly to the Word of God.
God’s Word is Better than the Riches of the World.
“I have rejoiced in the way of your testimonies as much as in all riches.” –Psalm 119:14
One of the most saddening things to witness is people who waste their lives looking for happiness in the vain pleasures of this world. Those without God have not experienced the incomparable joy His love offers, so they look to what the world offers: sex, drugs, money, alcohol, sports, entertainment, popularity, and position. The ultimate purpose of a person is to find delight in something, but sadly most of our culture overlooks the only person you can find that delight in: the person of God. To know joy you must know God, and to know God you must look into His Word.
God’s Word is Worthy of Your Time and Respect
“I will meditate on your precepts, and have respect unto your ways.” –Psalm 119:5
Love for God’s Word requires respect for God’s Word, and respect for God’s Word requires sacrificing time for God’s Word. There is no greater joy, no better pleasure than that of meditation on the precepts of God. There is no greater way to spend time than soaking up God’s Word.
For, “The more you read the Bible; and the more you meditate on it, the more you will be astonished with it.” –Charles Spurgeon**
God’s Word is Unforgettable Joy
“I will delight myself in your statutes. I will not forget your word.” –Psalm 119:16
When you have such a love for God's words to you that you count it better than all the riches you could ever receive, and give it more attention than anything or anyone else in this universe, you will experience unforgettable and everlasting joy. God’s Word is the Christian’s delight. It is his food, his drink, his very breath. The Bible is everything because it contains the reason for our creation, the problem of our sin, the message of our salvation, and the foresight of our future glory with God Himself. We will be spending eternity dwelling on these truths and worshiping God for them, so as Christians we must make the truths contained in the Bible our deepest love and our greatest joy.
"You will show me the path of life, In your presence is fullness of joy;
At your right hand are pleasures forevermore." -Psalm 16:11
