If America is so Immoral, Why Celebrate it?

In two days we will celebrate the 240th birthday of our country, which seems odd, almost even hypocritical, seeing how often we criticize and condemn some of the things our nation takes part in. Let’s be honest, the U.S. is NOT a country based on biblical ethics, no, it’s actually quite the opposite. Our nation might have been founded on Christian principles, but you would be foolish to believe we are still a ‘Christian’ nation.
The United States of America is a society made up of corrupt and wicked humans who are overly obsessed with pleasing themselves, and are by no means interested in any form of sovereign creator ruling over them. This is a society that does not care about God, or His law, just look at the tragedy of abortion. In America, 59,136,495 babies have been killed before they have even had a chance to see this world; more than 2,000 have been slaughtered today alone. This society does not care about how God made them, just look at the issue of transgenderism. The people of the U.S. don’t desire to honor God in His gift of sex, just look at the sins of pornography and homosexuality. It should be clear to Christians that this country is not a moral country, so why would we celebrate and take pride in being one of its citizens?
Because We Have Incredible Freedoms
God has blessed us with a country that gives us the freedom to gather together and worship Him. Many people around the world would be putting themselves in great danger if they did this in their country. Christians in hostile parts of the world have to risk their lives to attend a church service or to read the Bible, but here we are given the freedom to practice our faith. And not only that, we have the freedom of speech, to speak out against the evils of our land. I won’t have to worry about police showing up at my door after writing this because under the laws of our country, I have the liberty to do so.
We have the freedom to protect ourselves and our families in our right to keep and bear arms. We don’t have to rely on the government to be our safeguard, because under the 2nd amendment we have the ability to protect ourselves.
We have the liberty to pursue any career we want. We are not forced to be farmers or soldiers or slaves, we have the freedom of choosing and striving for whatever vocation we desire.
These are not even close to all of the freedoms we are blessed with in America, and it would be wrong for us not to be thankful for them.
Because Patriotism to Your Country Honors God
Patriotism to our country is reason enough alone to celebrate it. Of course, our patriotism to America should never become greater than our honor to God, but it is God-honoring to love your country. To understand more about how Christians should view patriotism click here.
Take a look at 1 Peter 2:13:
“Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.”
This passage of scripture is pretty clear that we are to be subject to and honor those who rule over us. Of course, we must obey God above men (Acts 5:17-32), so if any human institution tells us to sin we shouldn’t obey, but God desires for us to obey our leaders and love our country as long as they are not commanding us to participate in, or approve of sin.
So Go Celebrate!
Celebrate your freedom! Thank God that you live in a nation where you can freely worship Him. Praise the LORD that He has placed you in America. But do all of this while still recognizing that America is not perfect and it won’t last forever. In your celebration of this country, don’t forget your eternal country. Your home in heaven is your real home, and that is where your heart should be. Love the U.S.A. while looking forward to the kingdom of heaven.
