My Christmas Plea

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus our Lord,

As crazy as it may sound, it’s almost Christmas again. You’ve probably been busy buying gifts for loved ones, or cleaning and baking for all of the family and friends you are hosting this year. I understand that the holiday season brings a lot of chaos with it, but I want you, at sometime this Christmas week, to pause, maybe even gather your family around the Christmas tree, and meditate on Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection. You should think about these things all of the time on your own, but this week talk with those around you about who Jesus is and why He is so important. You might think that this sounds elementary, and you would be right, but the most simple truths are often the most incredible.

1. Think about what Jesus did.

He "though in the form of God did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men." (Philippians 2:6, 7)

Jesus, who is fully God, left a place where He was being praised as only God could. He humbly became the creation, while staying the Creator, so He could perfectly pay the penalty that was hanging over mankind's head.

2. Think about what Jesus went through.

"He was pierced for our transgressions and He was crushed for our iniquities." (Isaiah 53:5a)

While in heaven, Jesus didn’t have pain; there was no suffering for Him, everything was perfect. But He took on flesh and the pain and torment brought on with it. He went from being praised by angels to being mocked by men. Not only was His death a sacrifice, His whole life was a sacrifice.

3. Think about what Jesus accomplished.

"He will carry our curse and death He'll reverse, so we can be daughters and sons." -Who Would Have Dreamed, (Sovereign Grace Music)*

His sacrifice made sinful and perverted humans, perfect and spotless children. Because Jesus died for us we can live in eternity with Him. This is amazing! Just think about it: why would God, who has the comfort and glory of heaven, leave His kingdom to be killed by His own creation? I don't know about you, but this love is to great for me to comprehend and too wonderful for me not to respond in awe-filled adoration.

4. Praise God for who He is and what He’s done.

Let all that you ponder on about everything Jesus has done for you result in the praise and glory of God. Please, think about Christ this CHRISTmas, and let what you remember about our Savior bring you to worship Him with a wholly joyful heart. That is my plea to you this Christmas.

With Love,

your friend and brother in Christ,

Zach Jewell
